ps2 internet connection?

i am using a Qwest DSL modem to connect my ps2 to the internet. i have a slimps2. the ethernet cable i am using is a standard, yellow, cat5 ethernet cable. when i plug it into my ps2, the ethernet light on the modem does not come on. what am i doing wrong? could it just be my ISP?
