This urban myth about plasmas dying after X number of years is something that just refuses to die. It probably was started by people that have a business interest in LCD technology.

I had a plasma that was made in 2004. I just sold it to get a newer panel that\'s 1080p. All the plasmas back then were 720. It had zero dead pixels, and had a nice bright picture like the day I got it, zero issues.

Both LCD and Plasma TVs can fail early, like after a year, and when that happens, people tent to point at that and say \'see they don\'t last\' but that\'s not entirely true.

It\'s like if you see a Honda Accord broken down on the side of the road, would you think all Hondas broke down all the time?

The two main causes of flat panels failing early are power supply failures and main board failures. They seems to be more sensitive than the ones found in older CRT tube type TVs. It\'s best to connect them to protected power supplies.

If you see a plasma and like it go for it. When I wanted to go for 1080p I got another plasma because I like the picture quality a bit more than LCD, especially for the price.

The so called urban myth WAS NOT an urban myth in the early stages of plasmas. They had many issues and a VERY short life expectancy. HOWEVER, that has all changed. Plasmas and most all HDTVS (LCDS, OLEDS, DLP etc) all come with a \"Half-Life\" rating of let\'s say 70,000 Hours. Meaning that after that many viewing hours, the set may start to lose brightness....and will slowly start to darken, diminishing the life of your HDTV. But if you do the math...these new LCD and Plasmas should easily last you at least 15 years. So unless you\'re purchasing an old set, you have nothing to worry about.
