i try to hook up to x-box live directly to cable modem but ip address fails?

ive disconnected my computer from the modem and plugged my x-box directly into it with an ethernet cord that is bran new and also used other cords and ip address still failed i have cox communications what am i doing wrong

Before you plug in your ethernet cable into the xbox turn your modem off then on. I connect wirelessly now so but I used to have that same prob.

you need to reset your modem.
when you switch between to different items like an xbox360 and a pc the ip adress is going to be assigned to the one particular item that its currently plugged into when the power is turned on on the modem.
all you have to do is power cycle your modem.
which means unplug your modem from the wall and plug it back up.
that should do the trick. :]
