Someone please help me. I live in a 710 square foot all electric apartment in Indianapolis. This is my first time living on my own. They said to expect the electric bill to be between $75-$100. I didn't think I used alot of energy so I expected about $85.
My bill was $112.00.
I was very shocked. I do not use alot of energy. I keep my lights off. I've started about two weeks ago to keep the thermostat at 68 degrees when I'm home and 62 degrees when i'm not home. I put my computer on standby when I leave. I cut my TV off but I leave the comcost cable box on. It's a DVR and sometimes I record shows. I hand wash my dishes to save energy from the dishwasher.
What am I doing wrong? Should I cut my computer off instead of putting it on standby? Should I start cutting my cable box off? I didn't think these things took alot of energy, but maybe I was wrong. Also, should I cut off my thermostat? I've read that it is better to cut it down instead of off.
When I cook, I tend to bake alot of my foods. Could that be the problem? Should I unplug my microwave when it's not in use?
I have my modem and router plugged into a power strip along with my computer and printer. I would like to leave that on because comcast cable isn't very good and if you cut it off and on alot it will stop working and I can't get a signal.
Someone, anyone please help me lower my electric bill. This is putting a dent in my budget as I do not make alot of money.
