There are still a lot of people with analog TV's but the majority of us have either an HDTV with a built in tuner, or are subscribed to a monthly cable/satellite service.  They are transitioning to the all-digital spectrum in order to free up some air waves that were used for analog television signals.  This will allow them to experiment with new kinds of technologies, kind of like how they are experimenting with Nation-wide broadband in the "white space" of the air wave spectrum.

money is not the correct answer:

It's so the government has a direct way to know exactly what each household is watching.

Scary, isn't it?

For those people who don't (or can't afford cable [Charter, really?]), it gives them a better picture, more channels, better sound and frees up radio frequencies (Yes, TV stations use radio freq. to broadcast) to be used by emergency personal, like Police departments, fire departments, etc.

it allows them to streamline service, offer more options/packages that are digital only, and disable old technology that doesnt really earn them much money to have to upkeep.  landline digital cable is a much more reliable way to communicate with people around the country in case of emergencies like bad weather/etc as well so that might be part of it.  people that rely on rabbit ears/antenna lose service all the time based on even slightly bad weather or other environmental issues like solar storms.

February 17th 2009,-

All full power television stations are required by federal law to stop broadcasting in analog and switch over to digital transmissions at midnight.

Why you ask?

Digital over the air signals provide better picture and sound quality. This transition will also free up bandwith for public safety communications and wireless services.

Digital signals take up less Frequency Spectrum than analog signals.

The main reason why was that the FCC was running out of Frequencies( Radio, Telephone, and Yes TV!(Each chanel has its own Frequency).

With the advent of Cellphones Faxes and other things that need to use "over the air" broadcasting (even police and Fire radios) each little piece (meaning the band(like 88khz which consists of the band and a upper and lower side band)) was being used up . they needed to make more space

then there is the other thing(manufacturers needed a way to make more money by forcing us to buy all new stuff(remember Audio Tape?)

So EVERYONE IS FORCED to get cable or satellite! The entertainment industry and the government want everyone to have to PAY for any type of tv reception. They've obviously been harboring contempt for that little old lady down the street who watches "The Lawrence Welk Show" once a week on PBS with her old 'rabbit ears' style antenna. Those industries are trying to squeeze every inconceivable cent out of us.

To reduce the amount of bandwidth used.  Since you have cable it shouldn't affect you.

It is to free up bandwidth for mobile communications (which has been sold off to), and emergency communications. Didigal allows the smae stations to use less overall bandwidth by having their frequencies closer together.

The government mandated digital transition applies only to broadcast TV stations and those that receive them from antenna.
Being you have cable, this means you are not part of it, so are not affected, nor need do anything to prepare for it.
