I currently pay a monthly fee to rent my DVR through my local cable provider (Charter Communications).  Is it possible to buy my own DVR from circuit city or best buy?  I'm thinking that if I can, it will pay for itself and save me money over the long term?
(excuse me for being naive).  But, should I have to worry about compatibility issues?  If I buy a TiVo, how do I know it will work through my cable provider? Or is that a non-issue?

You can buy a TiVo almost anywhere, both of the stores you mentioned have them, however, you will still have to pay a monthly fee for the service, but you would save money in the long run. I think the TiVos run a couple of hundreds bucks or so!
