HDMI is the cable of choice for this digital video application, because it transmits both audio and video signal.
It’ll give you the best video quality and highest video resolution possible for watching Blu-ray Disc on your HDTV, playing video games in high def, or enjoying HD cable from your cable company.

yes they do, but the $50-$200 HDMI cables are a ripoff, you can get cables that do the same thing for $12-15

You'll also need to upgrade your Charter cable package to receive HD channels.

HDMI cables will improve the quality somewhat.  If, however, you don't have HD content coming in your not going to see that much of an improvement.  When I finally switched from component to hdmi I could definitely see a difference on programing like Discovery HD and even in my Xbox gaming...

If you're just connecting cable to a TV and have no home theater you can use component video cables with RCA audio connectors.  But this should be no better than an HDMI cable.  If I were a betting man I would say it looks crappy because it is crappy.  HDMI cables aren't some miracle cure for standard definition programming.  They don't process anything, they just send the signal.  So if your cable is standard definition the HDMI cable won't upscale it to HD.
