Guinean president dies and Yar’Adua rejects military government
December 22, 2008
Guinea’s second president Lansana Conte recently died on December 22, 2008 at the age of 74 as a result of a long illness. As a diabetic and chain smoker, he hardly ever made public appearances. President Umaru Yar’Adua on Tuesday condemned the reported attempt by the military authorities in the Republic of Guinea to take over power in the country following the death of President Lansana Conte. The president, who spoke through the Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, at a press briefing in Abuja said Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States would not accept any government that emerged through unconstitutional means. Yar’Adua was recently elected Chairman of ECOWAS. Speaker of Guinea ’s National Assembly, Mr. Aboubacar Sompare, who is the constitutional successor to the late president, had announced the death of Conte after a long illness. Conte had ruled the West African country for 24 years. Akunyili said, “We have received with great sadness, news of the unfortunate demise of President Lansana Conte of the Republic of Guinea which occurred on Monday. “While we offer our sincere condolences to his family and the entire government and people of the Republic of Guninea, we are however, disturbed by reports of attempts to effect succession in the leadership of the country, in clear violation of Guinea’s constitution and in breach of both the African Union Constitutive Act and the provisions of the ECOWAS Charter.” She added, “President Yar’Adua who is also the current Chairman of ECOWAS, unequivocally condemns the unconstitutional take-over of power in Guinea and warns that any government that emerges through undemocratic means would not be recognized. “We demand that democratic order be restored in Guinea immediately and that succession through the constitutional process be allowed to evolve.” She added that the Federal Government was following developments in the country closely with a view to ensuring that the political situation did not deteriorate. An army officer had on Tuesday announced on the state radio a “consultative council” of civilian and military chiefs would be set up. The move, according to BBC report, has been condemned by both the European Union and African Union. But Guinean Prime Minister, Ahmed Tidiane Souare, contradicted the army officer, saying that the government had not been dissolved. Sompare who confirmed the attempt by the military to seize power to a French TV said he did not think the entire military was behind unconstitutional take over of government.
