I know quite a bit about computers, but networking is what I\'m really not very familiar with. That being said, here are my results from speedtest.net:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/493717401.png

Yeah, I know these stats absolutely SUCK. I mean I\'m downloading a 1.2 GB update file on my 360; I started the download around 8:30 AM and it\'s probably just barely halfway done. It\'s 2:30 right now. WTF.

The stats say my results are drastically lower than the ISP average (Bellsouth) and that it\'ll take over 7 hours for me to download an 800MB file.

From my personal experience, my download speed usually hovers around 30 kbps. If I\'m lucky one day, I\'ll get around 100 kbps. It\'s not much better though, it still takes ages to download anything larger than a few MB.

So my question is, why? Is there anything I can do to get at least a decent connection speed? According to my Broadband plan I\'m supposed to have a 6 Mbps connection. Clearly this is not even close. I\'ve put up with it for almost 2 years, but I know this just isn\'t right.

If you need this info:
Modem - 2Wire HomePortal 1700HW
ISP - Bellsouth
Net-Connected Devices - 2 Desktops, 1 Laptop, PS2, Wii, Xbox 360
OS - Windows XP for all 3 PCs, SP3 for one desktop and the laptop, SP2 for the other desktop
In response to some answers, I have Avira Antivirus and Spybot on all 3 computers, so no problem there.  The PS2 and Xbox 360 aren\'t net connected most of the time.
I will try restarting my modem but I\'ve done that multiple times for other reasons and it\'s been the same.
And I am definitely not using dial-up, but heck, sometimes it feels like it.

What do you mean by 360? is that a computer? if so that may be why.that is pretty old and slow.or its. your internet modem. or the internet connection device in your computers. if Modem is slow all are slow. if line is slow all are slow. contact bellsouth and ask about it.

First of all, if you haven\'t already tried this, try restarting your Modem. I once had some huge speed issues with my current DSL service, and restarting the Modem fixed the problem.

If you\'re still having trouble, do a lot of other people nearby have the same ISP? If there are a lot of people connecting through Bellsouth\'s local hub, that could cause quite a bit of a slowdown.

But if restarting the Modem doesn\'t help, I would talk with Bellsouth and tell them that you aren\'t satisfied with the speed you\'re getting.

ur net is very slow... 30 kbps is like an speed of a turtle... ur net speed also depends on the traffic i.e, how many r using the same internet connection... if that traffic exceeds to a given limit in the server, the distribution of signals get slow... and it may also depend on the numerous connections u have given from one single modem to the devices... in this case, modem can\'t convert the analog signals into digital one quickly...

inform to a techie guy if my suggestions do not work...

good luck!..

I have the same problem with Verizon! I\'ve talked with customer service twice (*long* calls) and they check the connection to my DSL modem and saw full bandwidth. So, they are like \"it must be your computer\". Yet I only crawl at night - at 5am its full speed. I too am tired of putting up with it.

Maybe this is not the answer you were you looking for.

Usually a 1gb file should download in 10 minutes for a 6mbps service. Test again with everything but one computer off. If you still get that low speed call the ISP. Might have some problem with the installation. It really sounds like you are still using your dialup and you don\'t know it.
Now it is possible that with all of these devices going at full capacity you might see some slowing but not quite that much.
It is also possible, and seems likely, that all your computers are chock full of viruses and adware. Do you have AV protection? If not get a good one. I use Norton. Also get the free Adaware from www.lavasoft.com to get rid of the adware.
