bellsouth gives you a modem.
from the modem you would take an ethernet cable and connect that into a router..
a wireless router can give the house wireless internet to wireless enabled devices
a regular router can distribute the same internet connection to usually 4 different computers.
Routers are great if you have more than one computer..or if you have a laptop that has a wireless card with it.

a router allows you to connect multiple devices to your computers network, it allows you to share documents and print stuff stuff via the network aswell as access the internet if you. you connect your modem to the router using a ethernet cable, wireless routers enable any device with wifi or a wifidongle/card to connect to the network. if you already have the internet and a modem you can simply purchase a router.

Routers are physical devices that join multiple wired or wireless networks together. Technically, a wired or wireless router is a Layer 3 gateway, meaning that the wired/wireless router connects networks (as gateways do), and that the router operates at the network layer of the OSI model.
Home networkers often use an Internet Protocol (IP) wired or wireless router, IP being the most common OSI network layer protocol. An IP router such as a DSL or cable modem broadband router joins the home\'s local area network (LAN) to the wide-area network (WAN) of the Internet.

By maintaining configuration information in a piece of storage called the routing table, wired or wireless routers also have the ability to filter traffic, either incoming or outgoing, based on the IP addresses of senders and receivers. Some routers allow the home networker to update the routing table from a Web browser interface. Broadband routers combine the functions of a router with those of a network switch and a firewall in a single unit.

You must have a router, modem and service provider before you can connect to the internet. The computer is connected to your landline via the router, there are other ways of connecting to the internet, that\'s not the only way, like dongles are becoming more and more popular and ideal if you work on laptop or netbook.

you attach the router to the modem...then you can connect to the internet without plugging in an ethernet cable into your computer [wireless]
