Error 0x80004005 in Outlook Express?

I have a Gmail and a Bellsouth account and download all messages to OE. The Bellsouth messages always download OK, but the Gmail ones do not. When OE is open and I click Send/Receive, I get the above message for the Gmail, but not for the Bellsouth account. If I close OE and reopen it, it will at first show nothing in the Input box. If I click the Send box and then go back to the Input box, it downloads everything, from both accounts.  How can I get this corrected?
